Break Ground is a music video made in collaboration with Jésus Tovar, an audio engineer and music producer living in Toulouse, France. He produced the soundtrack to which I paired footage of the construction site during blasting. The rhythm of the music corresponds with actions that highlight the precise movements of large machinery and the relationship between construction worker and machine, which is one of proximity and non-verbal communication. In September I attended an EBC Safety Training Session that was mandatory in order to enter the construction site. I was surprised to hear the statistics on how many construction workers die each year while on the job. Break Ground sheds light on the intensities of this particular work environment. The title references two different meanings of the term ‘break ground’ as the video commences with the ground breaking ceremony held inside the offices of the Ottawa Art Gallery and puts in contrast the two work environments.
